Breastfeeding

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding helps prevent infectious diseases in infants such as ear infections, diarrhea, urinary tract problems and even asthma. Additionally, breastfeeding promotes the best possible health as well as positive developmental and psychosocial outcomes for the infant.

What is First 5 Sacramento Doing to Increase Awareness About the Benefits of Breastfeeding?

First 5 Sacramento provides funding to the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program for the Community Lactation Assistance Project. This project is aimed at increasing the number of mothers breastfeeding at discharge from the hospital and continuing for at least one year afterward. WIC provides mothers with access to Lactation Consultants who assist and support them with breastfeeding.

First 5 Sacramento will provide funding to local hospitals to help them move towards becoming “Baby Friendly.” A Baby Friendly hospital follows the Model Hospital Recommendations and would encourage breastfeeding, provide instruction and support to mothers who would like to breastfeed their babies and allow mothers and infants to room together 24 hours a day. It is important to target hospitals because they play a crucial role in providing breastfeeding support before and after delivery.
