Childhood obesity is a serious and growing epidemic in this state. Currently, one in five children are overweight or at risk of being overweight and the number is rising. Prevention efforts must begin early. It is crucial to address the increasingly unhealthy sedentary lifestyle of children. In addition we need to educate parents and caregivers about basic nutrition and physical activity needs.

What is First 5 Sacramento Doing to Improve Nutrition for Children?

At the March 2007 Children’s Nutrition Summit experts specializing in children’s nutrition and physical activity programs developed specific recommendations that provided a road map to addressing the obesity epidemic facing our children. Based on these recommendations, The First 5 Sacramento Commission identified the following areas to combat the obesity epidemic facing our youngest children:

  • Create communities where young parents have access to affordable and healthy foods and indoor and outdoor spaces where children can safely explore and be active. Projects include Farmer’s Markets, Small Garden Starter Kits, tot lots with a community garden, and indoor tot lots.
  • Educate parents, caregivers and providers about healthy nutrition by working together with preschools.

  • Total Funding: $2 million
